Restoring the Rio Laja Watershed

Wildlife refuge

In April 200l the federal government’s Comision Nacional del Aqua graciously and eagerly granted a concession to Salvemos el Rio Laja to establish a wildlife refuge on the shores of the Presa Allende. A generous patron and member of our board of directors, Francisco Arguelles, also offered to dedicate his adjacent land for the protection of wildlife. An estimated 10 acres --------- will then be off bounds to domestic animals and agricultural activities. Contributions of native plants and/or money are solicited to bring this refuge into glorious fruition. Sr. Arguelles has also offered to house Mexican and international scientists on his adjacent property.

Permission was acquired from the Mexican government to establish a wildlife refuge on the man-made lake, the Presa Allende, near San Miguel. The area will be fenced to keep goats and cattle from denuding the vegetation of the area. Mexican and international scientists will be invited to study the wildlife of the region. Housing will be provided.
